Description

1853-D Gold Dollar, MS63
Unusually Strong Strike; Rare in Mint State

1853-D G$1 MS63 PCGS. Winter 5-G. Beautiful yellow-gold surfaces contain hints of periwinkle interspersed throughout both sides. This coin has a significantly stronger strike than most examples of this notoriously weak issue, with almost full hair detail and the faintest flatness on the LA of DOLLAR and the 53 of the date. Eye appeal is exquisite.
This date is quite difficult to locate in Mint State, with only 25 to 35 survivors extant, according to Bowers. Most are in the MS60 to MS62 range, with the present offering representing a notable exception. PCGS has evaluated few finer examples. PCGS Population: 5 in 63, 3 finer (2/26).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25BW, PCGS# 7523, Greysheet# 8067)
