Description

1854-D Gold Dollar, Lustrous AU58
Low-Mintage Issue, Sole Die Pair

1854-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 6-H, sole die pair required for the tiny production of 2,900 coins. The obverse is far more sharply struck than the reverse, and on this piece all of them show full centrils, and the dentilation is full. Bold die clashes appear on the obverse -- apparently multiple clashes from a rotating reverse die -- and large raised die scratches seen on this coin appear on all examples, left of the mintmark, up to U, and inside the bottom part of the wreath. Glorious orange-red color and nearly full luster are consistent with the AU58 grade, but scattered small marks are to be expected. Population: 7 in 58, 11 finer (12/13).
