Description

Impressive Mint State 62 1854-D

1854-D G$1 MS 62 PCGS. A typical strike for the issue with the obverse very sharp, but with the reverse showing some weakness on the left side of the wreath and the bow knot. The obverse shows splashes of medium orange-gold color with some underlying multihued pastels, while the reverse is an even rose and orange-gold. Both sides have clean and frosty surfaces. A few small spots can be seen on the reverse and these serve as identification. One of the finest known examples of the final Type One gold dollar from the Dahlonega mint.
Since the publication of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861, the number of 1854-D gold dollars that have been certified by PCGS and NGC has increased dramatically. This is probably due to the fact that a number of unworn, but softly struck coins that had been graded AU 55 and AU 58 in the past have been upgraded as a result of the grading services becoming more familiar with strike versus wear on branch mint gold coins.
From the Chestatee Collection.
