Description
Rare Mint State 1854-D Gold Dollar
1854-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 6-H. The "slow and steady" Dahlonega Mint made about one-third as many gold dollars in 1854 as in 1853, perhaps due to the added capacity from the newly opened San Francisco Mint. While the D-mint 1854 gold dollar issue was only 2,935 coins, the S-mint dollars totaled 14,632. Due to the low mintage figure and the obvious circulation of most survivors, today AU pieces are rare, Mint State coins very rare. This Mint State example displays just a bit of central striking softness, with traces of striations in the fields. A few field marks, most notably around the 1 in the denomination, account for the grade. Winter's D-mint gold reference places the 1854-D third in high-grade rarity among the 13 D-mint gold dollars. Even with duplicates discounted, this piece is somewhat below the Condition Census for the issue. Census: 16 in 61, 9 finer (2/10).
