Description

1854-D Gold Dollar, MS61
Rare, Final Type One Issue

1854-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 6-H. The 1854-D gold dollar boasts a low mintage of 2,935 pieces, with a single die variety known for the date. Doug Winter estimates the surviving population at 85-95 examples in all grades, and Mint State specimens are very rare.
The present coin shows the raised die lines on both sides that are seen on most specimens of this issue. The surfaces are a pleasing orange-gold color, with a few lilac highlights. The design elements are well detailed, with definition sharper on the obverse. A few spots of darker color are evident on the obverse stars and the date. Census: 16 in 61, 9 finer (8/11).(Registry values: N7079)
