Description

1854-D Gold Dollar, MS62
One of the Rarest Issues in The Series

1854-D G$1 MS62 PCGS. Winter 6-H. Red-gold surfaces contain periwinkle highlights. A few hairlines exist in the obverse field, but they are of little consequence. The impression is better than most of this issue, with only a hint of weakness on the uppermost strands of hair and through the LA or DOLLLAR and the 54 of the date, although those elements remain fully separated from the field. Only one die marriage is known for the year, and many examples contain an area of raised die lines on the reverse around the mintmark. These are as minted, and are not scratches. The 1854-D is one of the rarest issues in the entire gold dollar series, with a surviving population of only 80-110 pieces, according to Bowers. In Mint State, survivorship narrows down to just 20 to 30 coins, with other authors, such as Winter, providing a population of as little as four survivors. Regardless of the exact number, the present offering is a rare opportunity to obtain a Mint State example of a key gold dollar issue, which has no finer certifications at PCGS.
