Finest Certified 1854-D Gold Dollar, MS64
Among the Lowest-Mintage D-Mint Issues

1854-D G$1 MS64 NGC. Variety 6-H. At 2,935 pieces, even among the Dahlonega series the 1854-D dollar mintage is extremely low. The only D-mint gold dollar issues with tinier emissions are the 1855-D (the only Type Two D-mint dollar), 1856-D, and the series-ending 1860-D and 1861-D. Doug Winter writes that the 1854-D:

" ... has an irregular and distinctive quality of strike. The obverse is considerably sharper than the reverse and it should be considered the major determining factor when grading the issue. The stars are small and very sharp while the hair shows strong overall detail. The milling is nearly complete on most specimens and shows good detail. The reverse is always seen with weakness at the left side of the wreath, the bow, OLLA in DOLLAR, and on the 854 in the date. The milling is blurry and indistinct."

This near-Gem is in a remarkably high grade for this conditionally and absolutely challenging issue. The obverse is indeed sharply struck on the stars and the hair, as well. A halo of golden mint frost surrounds Liberty's head, while the color deepens to antique-gold nearer the obverse rim. The reverse is missing most of the dentilation on the lower rim, and strike weakness does affect the areas Winter mentions -- but to a lesser degree than normal. The LA and 5 are the chiefly afflicted areas in terms of strike weakness, along with the left (facing) side of the lower wreath. A few diagonal marks on the lower reverse appear to be small planchet anomalies rather than post-mint contact.

This piece appears to be the sole finest certified of this elusive issue. Both NGC and PCGS have seen a handful each in MS62, but only NGC has seen one each in the MS63 and the present MS64. A remarkable find for the Dahlonega gold specialists, and a coin that is more than likely to see fierce bidding when it crosses the auction block. Census: 1 in 64, 0 finer (2/13).
