Description

Low Mintage 1854-D Gold Dollar, MS 61

1854-D MS 61 NGC. A very scarce D-mint gold dollar and one of the two examples from the William Miller Collection of Charlotte and Dahlonega Gold offered in our February Long Beach Sale. In that sale it was described in part as, "Not only is the '54-D rare in the absolute sense and in all grades, it is also a problem-ridden issue with most examples showing numerous mint-made planchet defects. This is an especially pleasing example, with light golden surfaces that are semi-reflective and fairly well struck except for the area of the wreath from the bow to midpoint on the left side." By way of identification, a pair of shallow, horizontal scratches are located just above the LA in DOLLAR, and a vertical planchet flake is out of the field between the 5 in the date and the upper left corner of the bow."
Ex: William Miller Collection (Heritage, 2/99), lot 6108.
