Description

Popular Type Two 1854 Gold Dollar, MS62

1854 G$1 Type Two MS62 PCGS. The year 1854 saw the first usage of the Type Two gold dollar design, a short-lived type that lasted only three years. According to Q. David Bowers, "The 1854 and 1855 Type II gold dollars are in strong demand for inclusion in type sets, this being far and away the scarcest of the three designs." The present coin was struck from clashed dies, and shows the weakness of detail almost always seen on this issue, but the 85 numerals in the date are actually stronger than typically observed. The surfaces show a minimum number of handling marks for the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
