Description

1854 Type Two Gold Dollar, MS63
Unusual Rusted, Bulged Die State

1854 G$1 Type Two MS63 PCGS. CAC. From the same die pair as described at length in lot 21 in the May 2000 Bowers and Merena sale of Part III of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. The curious characteristics of the obverse die include a heavily rusted border, an outline of rust around the portrait, and a remarkable die bulge centered at 11 o'clock. All of these features are mint-made and of considerable interest to the advanced gold dollar collector. This is a well-struck and original apricot-gold example with good luster and only a few faint marks. Housed in an old green label holder.(Registry values: N4719)
