Description

Lovely 1854 Type Two Gold Dollar, MS64

1854 G$1 Type Two MS64 PCGS. CAC. The Small Indian Head design gold dollar was introduced in 1854 to replace the earlier Liberty Head, but it only lasted until 1856, and then only at the San Francisco Mint, as officials soon discovered a flaw in the design. The deepest recess of the obverse was opposite the date, and prevented the date to be fully struck in most cases. Even the present piece, with a better than usual strike, shows some weakness at the 8.
The surfaces are excellent, with green-gold color and splendid rose patina. Only a few tiny marks are noted on each side. There are clearly visible clash marks in the obverse and reverse fields, and they help us determine the exact alignment between the two dies. PCGS has only certified 64 finer examples (10/09).(Registry values: N7079)
