Beautiful 1854 Type Two Gold Dollar, MS64
1854 G$1 Type Two MS64 PCGS. CAC. The Small Indian Head design gold dollar was introduced in 1854 to replace the earlier Liberty Head, but it only lasted until 1856, and then only at the San Francisco Mint, as officials soon discovered a design flaw. The high points of the obverse were opposite the date, keeping it from a full strike in most cases. Even the present piece, with a better than usual strike, shows some weakness at the 8.The surfaces are beautiful, with green-gold color and splendid rose patina. Only a few tiny marks appear on each side, along with clear clash marks on both sides. A fine near-Gem example for a type or date set. PCGS has only certified 65 finer examples (2/10).(Registry values: N7079)
