Description

1854-S Gold Dollar, MS64+
Sole Type One Issue From San Francisco

1854-S G$1 MS64+ PCGS. The James B. Longacre design was modified partway through 1854, just five years after the denomination was introduced in 1849. This is the first and final Type One issue from the San Francisco Mint, which was in its first year of operation, and it claims a small production total of 14,632 coins. The average certified example at PCGS and NGC falls fractionally shy of AU58. This high-end near-Gem is considerably finer, and there are only two higher-graded coins each at the previously mentioned third-party grading services. Orange-gold color overall includes small coppery alloy spots. Definition is pinpoint-sharp on the stars, curls, wreath, and legends. Just a few tiny marks are seen in the fields. Population: 10 in 64 (1 in 64+), 2 finer (11/21).(Registry values: N4719)
