Description

Attractive 1855-C Gold Dollar, AU50

1855-C G$1 AU50 NGC. Variety 2, first listed in 2008 per Douglas Winter, Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, third edition (2008). It is attributed by the final date digit almost entirely below the right base of the A in DOLLAR, and all digits being well struck; the 8 in Variety 1 is weakly struck. The 1855-C has the reputation "for the atrocious quality of its production" (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006). The present AU50 coin, while weakly defined in the hair and left obverse lettering, displays strong definition in the remaining elements. The bright yellow-gold surfaces reveal minimal circulation contact, though some unobtrusive clash marks are visible.(Registry values: N2998)
