    Description

Choice AU 1855-C Gold Dollar, Only 9,803 Pieces Struck

1855-C G$1 AU55 NGC. Unlisted Winter variety. In his 1997 reference to the series, Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, Douglas Winter states that the 1855-C is the second rarest Charlotte Mint Gold Dollar in high grades. He also states that only a single die variety (9-K) is known. His plate coin shows an obverse without clashmarks and a reverse with a clashmark between the D in DOLLAR and the 1 in the date. The second 5 in the date is centered below the A in DOLLAR. On this example, however, the obverse has clashmarks (as made) while the reverse does not, and the second 5 in the date is centered beneath the right half of the A in DOLLAR. The dies are also slightly rotated clockwise. This nicely detailed honey-gold example has a small mint-made planchet flaw after the 1 in the denomination, however, there are no relevant abrasions. Population: 14 in 55, 34 finer (7/03).(#7533) (NGC ID# 25C5, PCGS# 7533)

    Weight: 1.67 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
