Description

1855-C Gold Dollar, AU55
Lightly Circulated Example

1855-C G$1 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 2. The date shows the last 5 right under the A of DOLLAR, the more available of the two reverses known for the year (Variety 1 shows the 5 centered under the last A). The date is sharper here (due to both the dies and little wear) than on Variety 1, although there is slight softness at the top of the 8. This issue is softly struck as a rule, and this Choice AU coin shows considerably more strike softness on the obverse. The peripheral lettering, the forward neck of Liberty, and the LIBERTY on the coronet are all weak. On the other hand, this piece is high-end in terms of overall appearance, showing, as mentioned, only light wear and a near-absence of post-Mint contact. Clash marks appear behind Liberty's head. The surface color is an appealing reddish-orange. The 1855-C is popular as the only Charlotte Type Two gold dollar issue. Population: 11 in 55, 9 finer (10/13).(Registry values: N2998)
