Description

    1855-C Gold Dollar, AU58
    High-End for the Issue

1855-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The last 5 is right of center of the A in DOLLAR. The date is sharp on the last two digits, with some weakness on the upper halves of 18. The mintage of the 1855-C gold dollar was 9,803 pieces, but, more importantly, it is the only Type Two Charlotte gold dollar, and as such quite popular and in demand -- even more so, since the 1855-D is extremely elusive in any grade close to this near-Mint State coin. The surfaces are medium orange-gold and boast excellent eye appeal throughout. The obverse shows some minor planchet roughness in the fields, bold die clashing, and weakness of the strike on some of the feather plumes and the hair above the eye. LIBERTY is faint but discernible. Given the considerable remaining luster and paucity of mentionable marks, this is a high-end survivor of this difficult-to-grade issue. Census: 32 in 58, 14 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25C5, PCGS# 7533)

    Weight: 1.67 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
