    Description

    1855-C Gold Dollar, Near-Mint
    Single-Year C-Mint Type

1855-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 2. The Type Two gold dollar failed to strike well, due to the relatively high relief of the Liberty portrait. It lasted only three years, with the final year coined only at San Francisco. The Charlotte Mint struck the type only in 1855, and the meager mintage of 9,803 pieces resulted in only a few hundred survivors. Those coins are in strong demand from Southern gold type and issue collectors, and from gold dollar specialists. The present near-Mint example has unmarked caramel-gold surfaces. The obverse field is clashed, usual for the type, and a small strike-through (as coined) is above the second L in DOLLAR. The planchet had a granular texture, largely effaced by the strike, though hints of the planchet surface linger on or opposite high points, such as the CA in AMERICA and the ribbon bow, all as made.
