Description

1855-C Gold Dollar, AU58
Popular Branch Mint Type Two Issue

1855-C G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 2. The second 5 in the date is under the right side of the A in DOLLAR (variety discovered by Heritage's own Brian Koller). The 1855-C famously serves as the Charlotte Mint's sole entry in the short-lived Type Two subseries, claiming a small mintage of 9,803 coins. Doug Winter rates the 1855-C sixth rarest of the nine C-mint gold dollar dates, although this one is always subject to added demand as a single-year type. About 250 to 350 pieces are believed extant.

Definition is strong for the issue with hardly any friction at all over the devices. Clashing appears around Liberty's portrait, and the fields on each side exhibit noticeable semiprooflikeness. Small marks and a few hairlines are scattered over the orange-gold surfaces. Population: 7 in 58, 6 finer (6/22).(Registry values: N2998)
