Description

1855-C Gold Dollar, MS61+
Conditionally Rare, Single-Year Issue

1855-C G$1 MS61+ NGC. Variety 2. The Mint made several modifications to the gold dollar in 1854, resulting in the Type Two design. Striking difficulties limited the production of Type Two gold dollars to a single year at the North Carolina branch mint, and only 9,803 pieces were struck. The result is a highly collectible Charlotte issue prized by both date and type collectors. The design elements exhibit typical incompleteness at the centers, LIBERTY is faintly visible, and clash marks occur over each side. Deep orange-gold surfaces show partial luster remaining and reveal just a few wispy marks. This is the sole MS61 representative with a Plus designation at NGC, and only four examples are certified finer (7/14).(Registry values: N7079)
