Description
1855-C Gold Dollar, MS61
Important Type Two Charlotte Issue
1855-C G$1 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2. The appeal of the 1855-C
gold dollar is unique in the Charlotte series, it being a one-year
type coin and conditionally rare in Mint State. In Gold Coins of
the Charlotte Mint, third edition, Doug Winter estimates that
no more than five or so truly Uncirculated pieces survive, even
though the grading services have called 23 pieces Mint State (9/19)
-- a number that may include duplication. The poor strike quality
of this issue contributes to the challenge of grading examples.
Doug Winter writes: "I have never seen an 1855-C gold dollar that I
would characterize as being well struck." As many as 80% of the
surviving population is decidedly weak, regardless of wear.A textbook example of this is the present coin. Although graded Mint State, little definition is discernible in Liberty's hair, and the corresponding central reverse is somewhat "rough," reminiscent of an unstruck planchet. Additional strike weakness affects the borders on both sides. Charlotte specialists will recognize these attributes for what they are: a virtually unavoidable characteristic of the sought-after 1855-C gold dollar. This coin is bright yellow-gold with light signs of surface handling on the Liberty portrait and elsewhere. A faint glint of reflectivity in the fields is perhaps a redeeming attribute with regards to the eye appeal of the coin and likely contributed to the PCGS grade. PCGS has awarded just five coins a Mint State designation, one MS60, and four MS61s (9/19).(Registry values: N7079)
