Description
1855-C Type Two Gold Dollar, MS62
None Are Certified Finer
1855-C G$1 MS62 NGC. Variety 2. The 1855-C is a one-year
type coin with an original mintage of 9,803 pieces. It is less rare
than the 1855-D dollar but far rarer than the 1855-O or 1856-S.
There are over 300 coins known with most in the Very Fine to
Extremely Fine range. This issue seems to be chronically overgraded
by the services due to the difficulty in determining wear, as most
1855-C gold dollars were struck on defective, porous planchets.
There are no more than four or five true Mint State pieces known,
none better than MS62.In addition to its Mint State rarity, the 1855-C is plagued by mint-made production problems. The strike on this piece is somewhat above average for the issue. The quality of the planchet is clearly above-average for the issue with some mint-made roughness near UNIT in UNITED and less extensive roughness in the upper left obverse field below STAT in STATES. Free of any actual wear, this is a superior quality coin that possesses good appeal and displays superior quality for the date and grade. A couple of planchet flakes on the cheek and neck and some swelling under the chin do not detract, nor do some light handling marks in the reverse field. Each side is a bit light from the standpoint of color but the luster and "body" are good and the color is an appealing light yellow. In sum, this coin displays better-than-average eye appeal for the issue and designated grade, and is exceptional as such.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2009), lot 1472, where it sold for $23,000. This coin is tied with the Heritage 2005 FUN coin, lot 749 for the highest price ever realized by an 1855-C gold dollar at auction.
