Description

1855-C Gold Dollar, XF40
The Sole Charlotte Type Two Dollar

1855-C G$1 XF40 PCGS. Winter-2. In 1854, the Mint modified the size and design of the gold dollar, with the Charlotte Mint introducing the new Type Two design in 1855. Plagued with an unmanageable assortment of mint-made production problems, the 1856 issue was abandoned, and the 1855-C remains the sole Charlotte issue with this design. While strong reverse details are exhibited on this XF40 example, the obverse shows typical mint-made flatness and heavy clash marks. The use of inferior planchet materials has left slight roughness around the edges on both sides. Despite these characteristics, this highly collectible piece flashes warm orange-gold surfaces and serves as an attractive opportunity for gold and branch mint collectors.
