Description

Still-Lustrous 1855-C Gold Dollar

1855-C AU 53 PCGS. This lone Type Two Charlotte issue has become an infamous date in the gold dollar series, as it happens to be the date of the most poorly made products from this popular Southern mint. These coins normally suffer from a plethora of minting and planchet problems, one of the most noteworthy being the inherent weakness on the reverse of the LL of DOLLAR and the 8 in the date. This specimen is also softly defined in others areas as well, and the numerous handling marks on each side are subdued by the rich orange-gold color seen overall.
