Description
1855-D Type Two Gold Dollar, AU53
One-Year Type Coin, Scarce at This Grade

 1855-D AU53 PCGS. Winter 7-I. Ex: D.L. Hansen Collection.
According to Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint
(2023), "The 1855-D is the second rarest Dahlonega gold dollar and
it remains the rarest in high grades. It is an issue whose
desirability transcends most gold dollars from this mint...". The
1855-D is the only Type Two gold dollar struck at the Georgia
facility and it remains the rarest Dahlonega gold dollar in high
grades. Two varieties exist despite the small 1,811-piece mintage.
This greenish-gold Winter 7-I example shows the date further left
in relation to the right ribbon peak. The 8 in the date is weak and
the reverse is rotated about 20° clockwise in relation to the
obverse. Light die clashing is less obvious on this coin compared
to many 1855-D examples. A few light marks and minimal circulation
wear account for the assigned grade. PCGS Population (both
varieties combined): 12 in 53, 26 finer (10/25).(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25C6, PCGS# 7534, Greysheet# 8072)
