    1855-D Gold Dollar, AU53
    Only Type Two Dahlonega Issue

1855-D G$1 AU53 PCGS. Variety 7-I. This legendary Southern gold rarity, with a mintage of only 1,811 coins, is, according to Doug Winter, "conditionally, the rarest Dahlonega gold dollar." This previously-unseen example shows original luster and wholesome, un-dipped surfaces. Close examination reveals the light obverse clash marks and heavy reverse clash marks known for the J-I die variety. However, it is a relatively early die state for that variety, lacking the die crack that is seen to the right of the mintmark on later strikes. What distinguishes it from 90% of the population of surviving 1855-D gold dollars is this coin's strongly detailed strike, both obverse and reverse.

1855 was the first and only year that the Dahlonega Mint struck the then-new Type Two gold dollar. The process of learning to properly set up the dies to strike this thinner, larger diameter little coin proved challenging for this remote branch mint, and quality discrepancies were the rule for this issue. Most 1855-D gold dollars lack high-point details on the obverse portrait. And most examples show weakness (or complete absence) of the numeral 8 in the date, with some also missing the first 5.

Possibly no more than 10 specimens of the 1855-D gold dollar are known with full dates, and a check of auction price history over the past decade or so for coins XF and higher will show that whenever one of the scant few examples with sharp strike details have surfaced, they bring substantial premiums over the typical poorly struck examples of this issue.
