Description

1855-D Gold Dollar, AU53
Second Rarest Dahlonega Issue
Superlative Strike and Quality

1855-D G$1 AU53 PCGS. Winter 7-I. Even white-gold and green-gold surfaces are almost completely devoid of abrasions. Strike is strong on an issue that is known for weakness. This is one of only a handful of specimens known with no weakness at the 18 in the date, and the only soft area of note is a small region of the hair under the headband.

This example belongs to the short-lived Indian Princess type (Type Two), which was only produced from 1854 through 1856 and comprises only one in twelve gold dollars produced. Within the type, the two Philadelphia issues make up over 94% of the total. This Dahlonega issue, the only emission of this type produced at this southern Mint, sported the smallest mintage of the type at only 1,811 coins. Estimates of the surviving population range from 60 to 80 coins (Bowers) to 75 to 100 coins (Winter), making it the second rarest Dahlonega issue after the 1861-D, according to the latter author.

Two die marriages are known for this issue, 7-I and 7-J. The present offering was struck from the former pair of dies, as indicated by the first 5 in the date being centered under the peak of the right ribbon. The 7-J has this ribbon peak over the left half of the 5. Interestingly, three obverse and three reverse dies were sent to Dahlonega from Philadelphia on November 24, 1854 in anticipation of the coinage of this year. Unless an unknown die marriage exists, two of the obverses and the remaining reverse went unused, as the 1856-D gold dollar was a Type Three issue.(Registry values: N7079)
