Description

1855-D Gold Dollar, AU58
The Only Dahlonega Mint Type Two Issue

1855-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 7-I. A mere 1,811 gold dollars were minted in Dahlonega, Georgia in 1855, and those coins were the only ones from that Mint to feature the small Indian Head design that was issued from 1854 to 1856. The actual design proved inadequate, as the deeply recessed obverse dies meant that part of the date on the reverse failed to strike up properly. That characteristic is especially evident on the 1855-D gold dollar where the 8 is almost completely obliterated. Prominent clash marks show the outline of the Indian head within the wreath. The quality of this lovely orange-gold example is excellent, featuring brilliant luster and minimal handling marks. Population: 8 in 58, 6 finer (1/21).(Registry values: N7079)
