Description

Rare Full Date 1855-D Gold Dollar

1855-D G$1 AU 55 PCGS. While not designated as such by PCGS, this is a rare Full Date example that shows complete definition on all four digits in the date, as well as the word DOLLAR. The overall quality of strike is exceptional for the issue. The surfaces are not especially lustrous, but they are very clean and lack the detracting marks seen on most 1855-D gold dollars. Medium to deep green-gold color with flashes of orange-gold in the protected areas. Some light clashmarks are visible on both sides.
There are approximately 60-70 1855-D gold dollars known. Of these, probably fewer than ten have a full date. PCGS now designates "Full Date" examples (they did not designate it on this coin due to a lack of room on the insert) and many collectors now seek to add an example to their collection. We have long been of the opinion that if one is going to pay a lot of money for a coin (and nice 1855-D gold dollars are a lot of money), then it only makes sense to be able to read the date and/or mintmark.
From the Chestatee Collection.
