Description

Lustrous 1855 Near-Gem gold Dollar

1855 G$1 MS64 PCGS. The 1855 gold dollar is available without difficulty in all grades up through MS63. In his volume I of reference works to United States federal gold coinage, Paul Taglione says of higher grade pieces that they are "quite rare from an availability rarity viewpoint if not necessarily from an absolute rarity one. In point of fact, it is one of the most demanded of all gold dollars but it stakes claim to absolute rarity only at the Mint State 65 or better level ... ."
Ebullient luster issues from both sides of this near-Gem specimen, and a well directed strike imparts sharp definition to the design elements, except for the usual weakness in the top part of the 8 in the date. A few minor handling marks in the fields of the peach-gold surfaces define the grade.(Registry values: N7079)
