Description

Premium Gem 1855 Gold Dollar
Briefly Coined Type Two Design

1855 G$1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. Intense luster joins forces with pristine surface quality on this straw-gold Premium Gem Type Two gold dollar. The unusually strong strike for the issue confirms the lofty grade assigned by PCGS and subsequently verified by CAC. A typical 1855 gold dollar will display weakness in the LL of DOLLAR and the 8 in the date. While those features are not bold on the current offering, they are more defined than one would expect for the date. Poorly placed design features on the obverse and reverse caused metal flow problems on the Type Two gold dollars, hence the inadequately defined areas described above. The characteristic die clash marks are observed on both sides and are mentioned here only for the sake of accuracy, as they do not detract from the overall eye appeal of this splendid coin.
Demand stemming from type collectors keeps the prices strong on all Small Head Indian Princess Type Two gold dollars, especially in the higher grades. And, while the 1855 Philadelphia issues are not difficult to find in general, the competition for superior examples is fierce. Those collectors seeking Gem or better specimens have fewer than 100 coins from which to select, regardless of the grading service. As of (11/11) PCGS has certified 15 pieces at the MS66 level, with only six coins finer, and no example has achieved a grade higher than MS67. As a point of reference, the Smithsonian Institution coin is considered to grade no finer than MS63.
Ex: Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 3/2009), lot 2523, which realized $54,625.
