Description

1855 Type Two Gold Dollar, MS66
Only One Finer at CAC

1855 G$1 MS66 PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor. A few scattered, minor marks on this Premium Gem are consistent with the high Mint State grade. Certain clashed-dies features appear to be post-striking imperfections at first glance, but they are as made. This lovely gold dollar is highly lustrous with frosty surfaces and sensational aesthetic appeal.

Variety and Die State: Breen-6039. The Normal Date variety with the first 5 open and the second 5 closed, the upright meeting the ball of that digit. The obverse displays heavy clash marks around the Indian head, while the reverse shows prominent clash marks inside the wreath. A die crack is evident in the field over the right branch of the wreath, and die lapping appears within both branches.

Population (6/15): PCGS reports its finest to be 10 MS66, three MS66+, and four MS67. NGC reports 10 in MS66 (including one each with a Plus and a Star designation) and four MS67 finer, one of them a Star-designated coin. Twelve of the MS66 coins have CAC green approval stickers but only one MS67 finer.

Commentary: The Philadelphia Mint used several die pairs to coin 758,269 gold dollars in 1855. A four-digit date logotype punch was used to enter the date in each individual working die. All other details were included in the hub. There have been no detailed die variety studies for this date. Any collector who is up to the challenge will need to make a detailed study of date positions, horizontally and vertically, also examining each side for signs of doubling, date repunching, die cracks, clash marks, and other evidence of die deterioration.

Douglas Winter Commentary: The selection of Type Two gold dollars in the Duckor Collection is impressive. Four of the six issues are represented; only the 1855-C and 1855-O are lacking. This 1855 is exceptional for the date and grade with lovely color, immaculate surfaces, and a "freshness" seldom seen on this issue.

My good friend and numismatic mentor Paul Nugget related an interesting story to me about Type Two dollars. According to Paul, these were almost never seen back in the 1970s and Paul was in the forefront of the rare gold market, routinely handling quantities of fabulous Gem gold, the likes of which are seldom seen today. It remains a mystery where all these Gem Type Two gold dollars have come from. Is it possible that a hoard exists (existed?) and that some collector or dealer has been releasing a few cons into the market with savvy timing and patience?

The last MS66 PCGS-CAC 1855 Type Two gold dollar to sell at auction realized $51,750 as lot 4697 in the January 2012 Heritage FUN sale. Another in the same grade and CAC-approved brought $57,500 as lot 1397 in the February 2010 Heritage sale.
