Description
1856-D Gold Dollar, AU58
An Important Key Date
1856-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 8-K. The only known dies. The
1856-D gold dollar, from a scant mintage of 1,460 pieces, is always
in great demand as a key to the series. PCGS and NGC combined have
certified only 80 examples, mostly in Extremely Fine and About
Uncirculated grades. A mere six Mint State coins have been seen by
each service.Variegated peach-gold and mint-green patina compete for territory on both sides of this near-Mint State specimen, each of which displays a good amount of luster. Its strike is somewhat better than usually seen on the issue; all letters in LIBERTY are strong, as are most of the wreath elements, including the bow knot that is often weak. On the other hand, the U in UNITED and 5 in the date exhibit characteristic weakness, and the O in DOLLAR is filled, as typical. Light circulation marks are visible over each side, the most notable being a pinscratch on the left obverse. All in all, this is a nice representative of this key-date issue. Population: 13 in 58, 6 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N4719)
