    Description

    1856-D Gold Dollar, AU58
    Challenging Low-Mintage Issue

1856-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 8-K. The 1856-D gold dollar was the first Type Three issue from the Dahlonega Mint. A tiny mintage of just 1,460 pieces was accomplished, making the 1856-D one of the rarest issues of the series. A single pair of dies was sufficient to strike the entire production total in May of 1856. Probably no more than 75-100 examples survive today in all grades, and specimens in AU58 condition are very rare.

The design elements of this attractive near-Mint piece show the typical softness always seen on this issue, with the U in UNITED, the O in DOLLAR, and the 5 in the date all faintly impressed. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and display traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. Population: 14 in 58, 7 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N4719)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25CC, PCGS# 7543)

    Weight: 1.67 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
