Description

Attractive 1856-D Gold Dollar, AU58

1856-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 8-K. All 1,460 1856-D gold dollars were struck from a single die pair in May 1856, and fewer than 100 examples are believed to be extant (Douglas Winter, 2003). This apricot-gold Borderline Uncirculated example is crisply struck for the issue, as only the U in UNITED, the O in DOLLAR, and the 5 in the date display softness. Light clash marks are noted near Liberty's profile, but the surfaces are only faintly marked. Luster illuminates the legends and devices. A significant opportunity for the Southern gold specialist. Population: 12 in 58, 7 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)
