Description
1856-D Gold Dollar, XF Details
Dahlonega Mint Rarity
1856-D G$1 -- Damaged -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 8-K. The
Dahlonega Mint struck only 1,460 pieces in 1856. According to
Garrett and Guth, "The 1856-D is a popular rarity, with fewer than
100 examples known in all grades. This date is considered a key of
the series and is always in great demand." This is the first Type
Three issue from the Georgia branch mint. Areas of the obverse
field are heavily marked, and the reverse field displays notable
marks in the bottom left quarter. Despite the obvious surface
problems this example features fully struck design elements adorned
in even gold tones that become orange-gold at the rims. Census: 1
in 40, 36 finer (11/22).From The Allan H. Goldman Collection, Part III. (Registry values: N2998)
