Description

Elusive Mint State 1856-D Gold Dollar

1856-D G$1 MS 60 PCGS. The obverse is slightly weak on the hair of Liberty, but sharp on the border beads, while the reverse is very sharp with a strong wreath and a full date. As on all known 1856-D gold dollars, the U in UNITED is weak. There is an attractive deep orange-gold color on the obverse that lightens considerably on the reverse. Both sides are lustrous and crisp with nice surfaces. This is a legitimately Uncirculated example and it is extremely rare as such.
The 1856-D is the second rarest Dahlonega gold dollar in higher grades. An estimated 70-80 survivors are known from a tiny original mintage of 1,460 pieces. There are approximately 16-18 examples known in About Uncirculated, including at least a half dozen nice AU 58 pieces. In Mint State, the 1856-D is extremely rare. Neither of the other two that are known to us are likely to be for sale in the coming years, making this an important coin for the advanced collector of Dahlonega gold dollars.
We are aware of three Uncirculated 1856-D gold dollars. They are as follows:
1. Michigan collection, Ex: Superior 1/89: 261; Mid-American 5/86: 1819; Stack's session of Auction '84: 1702; Paramount's session of Auction '81: 1343. Graded MS 60 by PCGS.
2. Private collection, Ex: Stack's 10/93: 890; Stack's 10/64: 1605. Graded MS 61 by NGC.
3. Chestatee Collection, Ex: Sotheby's 6/96: 12. Graded MS 60 by PCGS.
From the Chestatee Collection.
