Description

Infrequently Offered 1856-D Gold Dollar

1856-D G$1 XF 40 Cleaned. The 1856-D is the third rarest gold dollar from the Dahlonega Mint after the 1861-D and the 1855-D. Winter estimates that between 65 and 75 examples remain from an original mintage of only 1,460 pieces, most of which grade VF and below. The overall appearance is somewhat muted and there are a few unfortunate hairlines, but this is not an unattractive coin. The color is honey-gold in shade and the light wear does not inhibit one's appreciation of the crisply impressed devices.
