Description

1856 Gold Dollar, MS66
Conditionally Rare Upright 5 Variety
Tied for Finest Certified

1856 G$1 Upright 5 MS66 PCGS. The 1856 gold dollar is known with both a slanted and an upright logotype on the 5 in the date. Of the two, the Upright 5 variant is significantly scarcer. Few Uncirculated examples are known, and almost all grade just MS64 or lower; Gems are rare and the finest are a pair of MS66 coins, one each at PCGS and NGC (5/15). The PCGS example, here offered, delivers glowing satin luster with a warm straw-gold hue. Trivial striking weakness is apparent on the OL in DOLLAR and the wreath bow, but the definition is otherwise pleasing. No major abrasions are present. For the gold dollar specialist, this outstanding coin should not be passed by.(Registry values: P2)
