Description

1856-S/S Gold Dollar, AU58
Single-Year California Type, FS-501

1856-S/S G$1 FS-501 AU58 NGC. The mintmark was initially punched northeast, creating this dramatic Cherrypickers' variety. The 1856-S gold dollar is the only San Francisco Mint issue for the popular Type Two design, which ran for just three years. This is a nearly Uncirculated example with central softness on the curls owing more to an incomplete impression than wear. Orange-gold surfaces are warm and appealing, with trivial hairlines scattered across each side.
