Description

1856-S/S Gold Dollar, AU58
Sole Type Two From This Final Year

1856-S/S G$1 FS-501 AU58 PCGS. This is the final issue in the short-lived Type Two series and the only Type Two struck in 1856 -- a combination that makes the 1856-S a popular choice for collectors. About half of the known pieces exhibit a dramatically repunched mintmark, as seen here. The fields on each side are bright and semireflective, with significant traces of luster around the devices. The coin is sharply detailed throughout with only slight abrasions evident. Population: 34 in 58, 25 finer (9/19).
