Description

1856-S/S Gold Dollar, MS61
Widely Repunched Mintmark

1856-S/S G$1 FS-501 MS61 NGC. The mintmark is widely recut on this variety, the secondary impression being high and to the right of the primary S. As a date, the 1856-S gold dollar is rare in Mint State. This piece is satiny and minimally abraded but slightly soft in strike on the hair curls around Liberty's face. Radial die cracks on the obverse indicate a late die state.
