Description

1856-S Type Two Gold Dollar, MS62
FS-501, Repunched Mintmark

1856-S/S G$1 FS-501 MS62 NGC. The mintmark is widely repunched, with the remnants of the errant S plainly visible to the upper-right of the primary. As many as half of the surviving examples of this issue are of this interesting variety. As a date, however, the 1856-S gold dollar is something of a rarity in Mint State condition. The San Francisco Mint was the only facility to strike Type Two gold dollars in 1856, producing only 24,600 pieces. As no Type Three dollars were coined that year in San Francisco, this issue is mandatory for a complete date and mintmark collection. Most examples seen are circulated, however, and Mint State pieces are seldom seen in any grade. This example displays bright yellow-gold luster and above-average design definition for the issue. The usual clash marks are seen upon close examination, but major abrasions are minimal. Census: 7 in 62, 5 finer (8/14).
