    Description

    1856-S/S Gold Dollar, MS64
    Sole S-Mint Type Two Issue

1856-S/S G$1 FS-501 MS64 NGC. CAC. The well-known repunched mintmark variety, first reported by Walter Breen in 1959. The mintmark was initially entered too far northeast, relative to the knot of the ribbon, and was also entered with a strong tilt to the left. The first mintmark impression was light and partial, and likely inadvertent.

The 1856-S is significant as the sole Type Two issue from the San Francisco Mint, and was also the final issue of the type from any facility. The mintage of 24,600 pieces is a fraction of the Philadelphia production of the design. The high relief of the portrait typically caused portions of the date to be softly brought up, but the present near-Gem is fully struck, unusual for the type. The lime-green and peach-gold toning is both original and highly attractive. Three lengthy radial obverse die cracks add further interest.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
