    Description

    1856-S/S Gold Dollar, MS63+
Only Type Two Issue of the Year

1856-S/S G$1 Type Two FS-501 MS63+ PCGS. The notation in our Short Description field just preceding is one that is "redundant but important," as all of San Francisco's gold dollar output -- a meager 24,600 coins -- was of the coveted (and fleeting) Type Two variety. In addition, no other Type Two gold dollars were coined at any U.S. mint in 1856, as the Philadelphia and Dahlonega gold dollars struck were of the Type Three design. The effects are twofold: Not only is the 1856-S a requirement for a complete mintmark or year set of Type Two old dollars, but the S mintmark gives the 1856 Type Two pieces optimal collectibility.

The 1856-S Type Two is also an issue that is seldom seen in Mint State; most are lightly circulated. This Select PCGS example offers rich orange-gold luster on surfaces that show light die clashing on each side, with some small die cracks on the obverse. The strike is quite sharp, the eye appeal top-notch given the minimal contact marks. Population: 6 in 63, 2 finer (3/14). (NGC ID# 25C8, Variety PCGS# 145703, Base PCGS# 7536)

    Weight: 1.67 grams
