Description

1857-C Gold Dollar, AU50
The Sole Die Pair

1857-C G$1 AU50 PCGS. Winter-1. The 1857-C Charlotte issue is known both for poor planchets and poorer striking quality. Not surprisingly, this example shows some planchet roughness and irregular dentilation from 4 to 6 o'clock on the obverse, as often found. The reverse central strike is characteristically weak, with the O in DOLLAR and the 8 in the date only partially visible. Ample luster remains, however, and there is not that much circulation wear on the coin. A couple of curious short scrapes have deeper, ball-shaped indentations at one end, in front of Liberty's face. The surfaces are a pretty medium-gold. Population: 38 in 50, 55 finer (9/25).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 7/2006), lot 832.
