Description

Rare 1857-C Gold Dollar, AU55

1857-C G$1 AU55 PCGS. The strike on this second example is a bit more typical for the date with some weakness noted in the centers, especially on the hair around the face. It also shows softness on OLL in DOLLAR and the 8 in the date. The surfaces are choice for the issue without many of the patches of roughness seen on 1857-C gold dollars. There is a small amount of luster present and in the areas that it is most vivid it has a slightly semi-prooflike fabric which is unusual for the issue. Both sides have light to medium reddish-gold color. This is certainly one of the dozen or so finest known 1857-C gold dollars and this is a rare, underappreciated issue in properly graded AU55 and above. Housed in an older PCGS holder and it appears to be conservatively graded by today's standards.
