Description

1857-C Gold Dollar, MS61
Rarest Type Three C-Mint in High Grades

1857-C G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. The only dies known for the date. In high grades (AU-Mint State), the 1857-C falls approximately in the middle of the scale as far as all Charlotte Mint gold dollars are concerned. However, among Type Three issues, of which there are only two, the 1857-C is the rarer. There are just a small number of properly graded Uncirculated pieces known and few are known higher than MS62. The surfaces are bright and lustrous with brassy-gold hues atop lightly abraded surfaces. There are areas of mint-made granularity on nearly the exact same spots as on the Winter plate coin and these are seen on virtually all examples of this date. Typically impressed, both sides are generally bold with a few areas of striking softness here and there. The green-gold color is evenly distributed, and the eye appeal also benefits from a lack of individually mentionable abrasions.
