Description

1857-C Variety 1 Gold Dollar, MS62
A Census-Level Specimen

1857-C G$1 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. The only known die pair for the 1857-C gold dollar was used to coin 13,280 pieces. As usual, the 18 is weakly defined with the 57 more boldly impressed. The large C mintmark is nicely centered between the ribbon ends, and close to the knot, providing an attractive layout. Both sides show extensive die erosion and bulges, although no clash marks or die cracks are evident. This pleasing Mint State specimen has satiny yellow-gold luster with only a few trivial surface marks. It is tied for the finest certified. Census: 3 in 62, 0 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N7079)
