Choice XF 1857-C Gold Dollar

1857-C G$1 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, authors of the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, have pointed out the difficulties associated with this issue, the first Type Three gold dollar produced at the Charlotte Mint. Production quality was poor, and high grade pieces are rare. This Choice XF example is relatively attractive for the issue, and the surfaces are quite lustrous and pleasing, with only a few of the mint-made problems that these coins typically possess. Post-striking defects are likewise quite minor for the grade. Population: 32 in 45, 57 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N1793)
